The last week of September is Active Aging Week. Founded by the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA), this week long campaign showcases and wholeheartedly celebrates the positivity of aging today. This campaign highlights the capabilities of older adults as fully participating members of society and spotlights the role models who lead the way.
Active Aging Week challenges society’s diminished expectations of aging by showing that , no matter what a person’s age or health conditions, adults over 50 can live life to the fullest in all areas of life; including physical, social, spiritual, emotional, intellectual, vocational, and environmental. The objective of the annual health-promotion event is to give as many older adults as possible the means to experience wellness activities and exercise in a supportive and safe environment. It also promotes the benefits of healthier, more active lifestyles across the life span.
The theme this year is “Exploring The Possibilities”. This includes emphasis on physical activity, skin health and nutrition. Also, incorporated into Active Aging Week is the WALK. The WALK encourages you to participate in different dimensions of wellness. This includes physical (each day), intellectual, emotional, spiritual, occupational, environmental, and social dimensions. Monday, the 26th – Take a turn at creative and stimulating mental activities (Brain Challenge). Tuesday, the 27th – Exercises for stress relief (Chair Tai Chi). Wednesday, the 28th – Spiritual Wellness -Use meditation and deep-breathing exercises at home. Thursday, the 29th – Occupational Wellness- (Handouts will be available). Friday, the 30th – We encourage you to focus on the importance of socializing with others. Socializing involves personal interactions, having meaningful relationships, respecting yourself and others, and creating a support system that includes family and friends.
